Here's something I've been thinking about the past couple of days. I had a conversation with my go-to beatmaker Meetro this past Thursday, as fallout from Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy Beats of Odd Future performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He had never really heard of Odd Future, so I had him check out the Fallon performance due to it being buzzed about that day. After watching it, he made a really great point about Hip Hop. There will be an artist that comes out of nowhere that you may have never heard of, but they managed to build up an incredible following out of left field, and manage to make an impact all in one fell swoop. It might not be of your particular preference, but you remember them.

It had me thinking back over the course of at least the past 2-3 years. Really thinking back to when Drake got big thanks to So Far Gone, and became the biggest new star in the rap game due to sounding like nobody else at the time. How when Jay Electronica shut down Hip Hop with "Exhibit C," a song that sounded like a throwback to the 90's and managed to sum up everything in one song what makes Hip Hop sound classic. How Slaughterhouse showed that there's such a thing as a second chance in the rap game, and also single-handedly making the concept of a group cool again (in addition to showing people still pay attention to bars and punchlines). How Lil' B managed to overwhelm the Internet with songs and videos all by himself after being written off as a one-hit wonder in his teens. And finally, how when the mainstream finally discovered Tech N9ne after all these years and gave him his recognition as the hardest-working MC in the game.

With all due respect to rock fans and whatnot, I don't get that feeling whenever someone brings up bands like The Arcade Fire or The Decemberists. I can respect good songwriting and whatnot, but there isn't really anything outside of Hip Hop that I can say has caught me offguard in a very long time. And for me, I get the same thing from catching onto Odd Future a few months before they started to blow up. They sound like nothing else out, they managed to build a following out of nowhere, and the music is actually really fucking good. In a time when Hip Hop has gotten safe and predictable at times, you need that one thing that knocks you on your ass, and reminds you why you fell in love with it in the first place to begin with. It's that sense of urgency I love having, and want to continue to have for years to come. There's no other feeling I can compare it to. Just when you think there's nothing that can surprise you and that you've seen it all, it always has something new up its sleeve.

I feel it 24/7...all day. Everyday. It's not just music, but life in general. Feels like I'm in a race or something. And I don't like that feeling at all, I actually hate it. But I can't shake it. It's fucked up.

In music, when I first started doing this, nobody cared about what I made or how I made it or anything. I just did what I felt and had fun with it and enjoyed it because it was mine. But now there are people that expect this or that from me, it just gets tiring after awhile.

Personal life clashes with music all day, everyday. Not sure if I'm making the right decisions and its more and more choices to make everyday. You never know if you made the right or wrong choice until its too late.

The music industry just kills me too, when I sit down at my keyboard to create something I shouldn't have to have a guideline or "box" that I have to create in, I should be able to make whatever I want. And for the most part I do, but when you hear things like "I want a beat like The Dream new song" that shit makes me want to scream. But bills are coming in, and a son to feed. What do you do??? Do you sacrifice your art for profit, or do you say ''no'' and keep doing your own thing, your own way??

I dont know why I titled this entry "So Far...Gone". It just popped in my head when started this. Just thought I'd let you know that...random, i know. But I haven't been on my blog lately because i've been trying to get over this whole beat block thing. I think it comes from it being a brand new year and I just wanna be on some next level different shit. Tired of the same ol', same ol'. So i'm warning you now of the new music you get from me, might not be what your used to hearing. A friend of mine brought it to my attention of how the majority of "hip hop" doesnt like change, at all. If you play the average rap fan some music and its too far away from what they listen to they will most of the time write it off as "wack" before really listening to it. And this isn't a excuse to be able to make some wack shit and call it "different" just because.

Yesterday I chilled with my son all day and took him to the park, and it amazed me at how much people's lives stay the same no matter how old you are, you just go through the same situations over and over. I just hopped in the car with Stage to head out to L.A. to handle stuff for the "All Night Flight" single. And I just realized how I molded my life to be exactly what I wanted, for the most part anyway. I wake up in the morning at whatever time I feel like, and then do whatever I feel like doing, make music, get on the internet, or just watch t.v. The average person has a job to go to every morning at 7:30am, that they hate!!!

I try not to take it for granted, I just realized I need to spend more time making music then. I just realized how wack our era is...like seriously. Every nigga thinks they are a rapper or the next big thing. And I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just speaking to the people that think this is a get rich quick scheme. I see sites like broadbeats.com with artists like Dirty J who's the "best artist I never heard of" and I just can't but shake my head and think "Are we really gonna' just go out like that?? LIKE THAT?!?!" If you been doing music for over 5 yrs and haven't advanced your career in any kind of way, give up. Because you could have done college in 4 yrs and had a somewhat decent life. If your offended by this then your probably one of those people in that category.

We need janitors, McDonald's employees and Car Washes just as much as we need rappers and producers. As you can see I did A Lot of thinking on this trip to L.A...lol.

Hip Hop Is My Gateway Drug...

People seem to think that I just want to be a hip hop producer and being the next Timbaland, Dre, or Kanye is my goal. Your wrong. I just love music. Period. I want to branch off later on in life and do Alternative, Rock, Pop, R&B, Jazz, score movies and just make as much music as possible. But because of my age and what I'm into right now, hip hop is the best thing for me to start my music career off in.

Hip Hop is my gateway drug, like weed. But I'm looking to get into the good stuff. The crack, and heroin. Lol...crazy analogy right???

So last night I'm having a conversation with this chick and she's telling me how I should have a "backup plan" in case music doesn't work for me. I just laughed. There is no other option, why would I waste my time chasing a career that I know I don't really wanna do for the rest of my life. I would rather give my all into what I'm happy doing and if it doesn't happen then at least when I die I can say I gave my all into what I really wanted to do and not look back wondering "What if..." That's the worse.

So back to what this chick was telling me, she's saying how at my age right now I should "have my shit together". Lol. But yet she's telling me how she's going to school to be a lawyer but she's pretty sure she's gonna quit once it gets too hard. The irony. But I'm the one that needs to get their shit together. Now I see what Hed be talking about.

This will be a long one...

So its 3:35am and I'm at a "party/kickback". Obviously I'm bored out of my mind and have no clue why I'm even here if I'm blogging right now. I could be at home, making music, chillin' with my son or even with B. Sometimes I don't even understand myself and my actions.

Hmmm...

At the show earlier tonite we did a few hours ago I just couldn't help shaking my head at the other "artists" that were performing. Just sad. They aren't serious about this, they don't really want this. Or maybe they do, who knows?

I need 2 gigs of RAM for my computer to mix these songs me and Ant been doing. Shit is wack, its always something trying to stop my progress.

Today I just been hearing alot of niggas talking about "this is hip hop,

this aint hip hop". That shit gets sooo tiring to listen to all the time. People complain about the artist that are coming out and the music that they're making, but when artists are being themselves people find a way to hate on them.

And for all the "producers" and "rappers" out there trying to get in the game, if you not in this foreal just stop. Let me say it again. STOP. Just leave, I do music foreal and I always have, this isn't a joke to me. I don't show up to your job and try flipping burgers half assed so why do you feel the need to try to make music for a few months and feel the need to promote as if your the 2nd coming.

Then at the same time your shit is a gimmick and your trying to give people what you THINK is "hot" or what they "wanna hear". Just be foreal with yourself first, music is a expression of the inner you. Just create the music that you know is true to you, and then if other people feel it, then you figure out a way to market it and promote it to the masses.

Im just sick of the wack shit.

So I wake up this morning and hop on the internet and start browsing around. I come across a article on allhiphop.com talking about what happens when people get together in crews and one of the people makes it into the game. What happens to the rest of the crew??

Are they instantly put on and dont have to work anymore since they helped you get to where you are? What if they didnt actually contribute to your career at all and you were just homies? What is the obligation that the "star" has to his homies that he's known since back in the day, but didnt give a damn about the "dream"???

I wanna hear some of you guys thoughts on this topic and what you feel is the right thing to do...

Just like Stage predicted to me a year ago, Lil Wayne leads the Grammy nominees for 2009 with 8 nods. This should be a interesting year seeing who wins in the hip hop categories.

Album Of The Year:

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Raising Sand

Coldplay, Viva La Vida

Ne-Yo, Year Of The Gentleman

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III

Radiohead, In Rainbows

Since I haven't heard Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Radiohead or Coldplay's album I can't say who I think will win. But I can't remember the last time a hip hop or R&B album won album of the year.

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III

Lupe Fiasco, The Cool

I have no idea how this one will pan out. Jay's album was great but he doesnt necessarily need this one, Lil Wayne sold the most records and had the biggest year, but I think Lupe's album was something refreshing for hip hop. I would honestly like to see Lupe win this one but I think Wayne will get this.

This one is a toss up between "Swagger Like Us" and "Put On". The emotion behind Jeezy's record was crazy, but its almost impossible to top the combination of T.I., Kanye, Wayne, and Jay-Z.

Flo Rida feat. T Pain, "Low"

Estelle or Flo Rida will probably get this one because their records were the 2 biggest ones and had the most impact. Probably leaning toward Estelle a lil more because "Low" is just ughhh everytime I heard it...

The one thing that I noticed in the hip hop category is that Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye dominate in pretty much everything. I wish there was more of a variety of artist that were nominated, but this makes me wonder is the music these artist are creating really that amazing or is hip hop really that bad right now...???
